There are two main types of roller crushers: single-roll crushers and double-roll crushers. Single-roll crushers are equipped with a rotating cylinder which squeezes the material against a fixed plate or screen. The double-roll crushers, in contrast, are equipped with two rotating cylinders that compress the material between them.

Roll crushers reduce the size of the feed by crushing it between the two rolls, as shown in Fig. 4.7. These consist of two heavy cylinders revolving towards each other. The feed is nipped and pulled downwards through the rolls by friction on the surface.

It does this by using a spinning shaft that makes the movable jaw move back and forth. When the movable jaw goes towards the fixed jaw, it squishes the stuff in between and breaks it into smaller bits. Then, this broken stuff leaves the crusher through an opening at the bottom called the crushing chamber cavity.
