Kerala: The decision to import sand was in view of shortage and environment issues caused due to mining of sand from river beds in the state, an official release said.

The National Green Tribunal has rapped Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) over its "incompetence" to decide environmental impact of sand mining in a coastal village in Kollam district.

It is a growing imbalance as prevailing uncontrolled sand mining and its adulteration continues to cause significant environmental damage and socio-economic problems.

The indiscriminate and unscientific sand mining has become a serious environmental threat to the river systems of Kerala. The present study focuses on the determination of sand inflow in different stretches of the Periyar River and thereby optimizing the sand removal by considering several socio-economic and topographical features.
